Sylvia Shepherd-Clarke
RN Ad.Dip SEN MA(Ed)
Originally qualified in several branches of nursing culminating in a post with responsibility for 'Quality and Standards' within an NHS setting. She re-trained as a teacher and taught within special education. During that period Sylvia developed a dedicated interest in encouraging pupils to develop communication and literacy skills, and subsequently produced a range of books, (illustrated by a volunteer professional artist) with all text supported by symbols; the pupils made pleasing progress.
Following her years in teaching her 'love of literacy' remains and she has continued writing fiction and none fiction books resulting in a 'tailor made' reading scheme for pupils with special education needs; now in use in many schools and libraries throughout the UK.
Her work continues to this day, the books are not a commercial enterprise, and do not make a profit, but they continue to benefit pupils of all ages, including those with English as a second language.
